The Stone of Jordan was traded for gold and eventually used to summon Diablo. It was so valuable, players began to exploit it and Blizzard had to patch the game.
Diablo II had no auction house. Trade happened in channels and on forums, and prices needed a denominator. The ring won because it was good on every build, so demand did not depend on what you were playing. Armor was quoted in rings. Runes were quoted in rings. Nobody decided this. It just happened.
iPatch 1.10 added a counter. Stones of Jordan sold to vendors for gold across a realm ticked a hidden total, and when it filled, Uber Diablo walked and the server told everyone online. Burning the money supply had a boss attached to it, and players coordinated the burn on purpose, because the drop was worth more than the ring.
East, West and Europe were separate economies with separate ladders. The same ring had a different price on each, and the only arbitrage was knowing somebody on the other realm.

Nothing is paired with the ring yet. Anything that launches against SOJ would take a slot, and selecting it would identify it here.
A transfer of the ring pays a tax to holders in GLDx, tokenized gold on Solana. In the old game this ring was what you sold to the shop for gold. Here the sale pays everyone still holding.
A Stone of Jordan was never worth dollars. It was worth other items, and everything else was worth some number of rings. It was the currency of record, but could be sold to shopkeepers for gold to eventually clean out their inventory and summon Diablo.
Nothing is quoted in SOJ yet. If something launches against the ring it appears in the Stash.
